From skullduggery to a fishing industry

image preview

We know very little about manmade piers and quays along the western seaboard before the beginning of the 19th century, when a lavish programme of safe harbours were built not only to encourage fishing, but as relief programmes in times of distress. It was also an attempt to replace the activities of piracy and smuggling with an industry based on the believed bounty from the sea.

Football, bloody hell

“Mayo football is in a critical state,” “the players are finished,” “the management aren't up to it,” “I hope Roscommon beat us to put us out of our misery.” They are just a small example of what I listened to last week in the build up to the replay against Roscommon. Fast forward three days and the Mayo for Sam bandwagon is in full swing. “That was Mayo's best performance in Croke Park,” “This is the strongest squad Mayo have ever had,” “every player played well,” “Rochford is a tactical genius,” “I think we'll win the All-Ireland this year.”

There was great excitement and fun at Western Care’s St. Rita’s residential home, Claremorris, recently, when the six members of the Tuam-based super group, The Saw Doctors, visited to launch the 10th annual Kathleen Conneely Charity Walk on Clare Island for Western Care Association local services. Galway’s sandwich renaissance

image preview

We are a nation of sandwich eaters. Every cafe, counter, and hatch does its own variation, with ingredients ranging from withered lettuce to flash fried steak, from slathered 'spread' to flavourful aioli. A lot of people consider a sandwich to be a simple construct of a sliver of processed meat or a square of processed cheese between two pieces of white sliced pan, but they are wrong. They think that a sandwich is just a sandwich. Sadly, this tragic, flaccid, excuse for a meal is a lunchtime staple for too many who do not know the magic of a lovingly made 'buttie'. Let's face it, no truly good sandwich is ever going to win any awards in the health stakes, but then if you are looking for a low carb, paleo option you can have a salad.
